international correspondent dan rivers. he's in london to to see bring us the latest. good morning. what can you tell us then about the reports of this final assault? >> reporter: well, this is being carried out by algerian state-run television saying that seven further victims have been recovered and 11 militants. now it's really difficult to grasp the total number of hostages that have been killed so far. we're trying to put it together, but they probably include japanese, brits, malasians, possibly some norwegians and other nationalities. it's very difficult to know the final numbers. but adding up what we know it could be up to at least 32 missing and possibly up to 26 confirmed dead, although those numbers have been changing a lot. that gives you a sense of the scale of this anyway. among those, at least one american i'm afraid confirmed dead. six americans confirmed rescued, freed. and those details as i say, we're hoping to try and get more clarification in the coming hours. >> what is being said about this crisis there in britain? >> reporter: well, william hague, the british foreign sec

necessary to protect americans in a harrowing hostage crisis unfolding in algeria. dan rivers is in london to bring us the very latest this morning. dan, good morning to you. algeria is defending a military operation that now has left at least one american and 11 others dead. what can you tell us about that? >> absolutely. this situation is not over yet. i think that is the headline. they're saying they're still pursuing terrorists and some hostages within this sprawling gas plant in the far south of algeria. as you say, the state department has confirmed one death. it's been widely reported he is from texas. the state department not going into further details about how many americans may still be missing. we're waiting for an update from london from the british foreign secretary william hague, chairing an emergency meeting about this. algerian state television is reporting that terrorists were planning to kill all of the hostages and to blow up this plant. so, it could have been a lot worse, had they managed to get through that. in the end algerians went in, freed some 650 people. there a

correspondent dan lothian. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> so nice to be with you in person here. >> on this chilly morning. >> yes, on this chilly morning on the national mall. we saw the president unveil his gun plan this week. do you think that's job number one right now? >> i think it is. you hear the president and the vice president talk about seizing the moment. they realize that there are other times when you have these mass shootings, everyone talks about, you know, coming down with some kind of new regulations. and then they forget about it. so they realize in this case, they have the public support. polling is showing that most americans want stricter gun laws. and obviously, there will be opposition up on capitol hill. there is some bipartisan support for what the president is doing, but i think in general, there is a sense that now's the time to get it done. so that will be a big priority for the president. >> we've also been talking quite a bit about the debt ceiling. we now have the president, he's already gotten this offer from the house republicans for this extens

. for that i want to bring in my colleague, white house correspondent dan lothian. dan, let's talk about priorities for the president's second term but first it's an interesting little nugget of history. this is a historic day and also a historic inauguration for president obama because he's going to match only fdr in getting two double swear-ins or four swearing-ins if you will. why is that? >> first of all, look back to 2009 when justice roberts and the president kind of stepped on each other, the word "faithfully" out of order, there was a question whether or not it was legitimate so, they had a second one in the private quarters of the white house. this time around the constitution says you have to administer the oath before noon on the 20th. on sunday is not typically when we have the inauguration, so they'll have a private ceremony in the blue room on sunday and then on monday they'll have the official sort of public swearing-in for the president. >> and the parade and pomp and circumstance we expect in an inauguration ceremony. so, tuesday the pomp and circumstance monday, tuesday

, dan wrote that she distributed drugs for lance, and i have a huge problem with -- a huge problem with that because i really think a lot of these women, they love the lifestyle because in europe cycling is completely different than it is in the united states, and obviously lance and kristin were making a lot of money. a lot of people were making a lot of money, and i think a lot of these women love the money and they didn't care if their husbands were doping because you could afford the louis vuitton and the cartier sunglasses. so i have a problem with that, a big, big, big problem with that because i never blogged about morality. i never blogged about doing the right thing. i tried to walk the talk, and we see what -- we see what happened, so i'm not so sure i i mean, i have a real problem, and i don't want to -- it couldn't have been easy to be married to lance, not at all. she distributed drugs. i mean, dan wrote that she distributed drugs for lance, and i have a huge problem with -- a huge problem with that because i really think a lot of these women, they love the lifestyle b

themes and we just learned this from dan lothian who covers the white house. this is sort of the fact that the president is confronting the reality of a divided washington that he'll be acknowledging that there are some divisions but he'll talk about how there's responsibility to work on issues where there are common ground and, of course, this is considered certainly a speech that is somewhat hard to deliver not only because historically second inaugurals are not always very memorable but also because it's situated in a very weird place temp porely for president obama. we've just had the fiscal cliff battle. there's an upcoming one with the debt ceiling. ep has to acknowledge this not so pretty reality in the washington as he gives a speech that's supposed to be inspirational. >> the reality is the same congress he was working with on friday will be the same congress he's working with come tuesday despite the speech. we'll watch closely to see more details coming up. thank you so much. we'll watch more of this ahead. >> we always know security is tight in washington, but for the inau
